Marks and Meanings

handout from SHCG seminar

Resource verified by SHCG editorial group

Notes:

In June 2009 SHCG ran a seminar called Marks and Meanings, exploring common marks found on objects (such as hallmarks, patent and trademarks).

Dr Jim Andrew focused on what patents can tell us about artefacts, and how to research them. Other common inscriptions such as hallmarks and registered designs were also covered. Delegates learned how to use a free online database to trace 20th century patent numbers.  This handout from the seminar is a useful starting point in understanding marks that are found on objects, what they can tell of the age and provenance and ideas for further reading and research.
