The term ‘Social History Curators Group’, ‘SHCG’, ‘us’ or ‘we’ refers to the owner of the firstBASE website.  The term ‘you’ refers to the user or viewer of our website.

 

Use of firstBASE:  firstBASE is maintained by the Social History Curators Group (SHCG) and its firstBASE editorial committee.  firstBASE is available for use, free of charge, to both SHCG members and non-members, under these terms and conditions.

SHCG has created firstBASE as a resource to help all those working with social or local history collections, and as such, anyone may use the material on the website for their own (or museum’s) non-commercial activities such as private study, research and for educational purposes.  You may do this by printing copies or by downloading on to your personal computer.

If you incorporate material from firstBASE into any non-commercial, personal/museum research, instructional or presentational compilation for private or educational use, whether in hard copy or electronic or any other form, you must acknowledge the copyright holder and where applicable firstBASE/Social History Curators Group.

Without the written permission of the relevant copyright holder, no part of firstBASE may be published in any medium or transmitted to, or stored in, any publicly accessible website or other form of electronic retrieval system for commercial purposes, nor accessed in such a manner as to make them appear part of any third party's publication, website or electronic database or retrieval system.

The names, marks and logos identifying firstBASE, Social History Curators Group or third parties are proprietary marks of these organisations and may not be reproduced without their prior written permission.

 

Contributing records and resources to firstBASE:  It is important that firstBASE only holds relevant records so users can be sure they are valuable, helpful resources.  Please make sure that any contributions to firstBASE provide historically accurate information in their contents, are from reputable authors or organisations and are significant in their collections and/or content.  All records and resources submitted to firstBASE will be moderated by the Editorial Committee for inclusion.

SHCG and the firstBASE website are under no obligation to publish any resource, text or images submitted to the site.  If the Editorial Committee feels that a resource is not suitable for inclusion, it will not be verified and will be removed from the site.

Members of the firstBASE Editorial Committee may alter the text of material accepted for publication for clarity, accuracy, relevance etc. without the original submitter being notified.  We reserve the right to reject material on the grounds of copyright infringement, offensiveness or other legal considerations.  We do not accept contributions of a commercial, marketing or advertising nature.  We will, however, accept content from or about commercial organisations (for example, relevant downloadable resources, information about the history of commercial organisations or their products).  Digital versions of images and documents submitted may need to be cropped or resized by the Editorial Committee in order to be suitable for display and uploading.

 

Information held on firstBASE:  All resources recommended on firstBASE go through a moderation process by the firstBASE Editorial Committee.  We do our best to check resources for relevance, historical accuracy, quality of information/images, etc. and we regularly check that weblinks are live and continue to work.  However, SHCG is not responsible for the content or reliability of any resource or linked websites.  We cannot guarantee that weblinks will work all of the time and we have no control over the availability of linked pages.

firstBASE and SHCG do not necessarily endorse the views of those people submitting material or commenting on resources on the website nor the views expressed within recommended resources.

 

Copyright:  firstBASE and its content (including but not limited to its text, images, video/film, graphics, design, layout, look, appearance artwork and the information held on the website) are protected by copyright.

By uploading any resources to firstBASE, you are agreeing that you have permission to add and republish the material on a public website from the relevant copyright owner.  You must ensure that the copyright holder is acknowledged in the relevant credit lines.

We have made every effort to locate copyright holders of the resources and materials included on firstBASE in order to obtain their permission to publish it.  We have identified and credited all known copyright owners, however, should you feel that anything contained within firstBASE is your copyright, please contact us so we can make sure it is credited properly, or removed.

Data Protection: We operate within the confines of the Data Protection Act.  When you log in and create your account to upload new or to comment on existing resources we ask you for some personal information.  Some of this is for us to prevent spam, some is for us to be able to see the types and locations of people who use firstBASE so we can look to improve it.  We ask for your email address so we can send you updates about firstBASE and SHCG.  We will not pass on your contact details to anyone else without your permission.
