Dating Collections Using Standardised Wash Codes on Garment Labelling

Resource verified by SHCG editorial group

Publisher: Oxfordshire Museums Service

Notes:

A fact sheet aid to dating costume and textile collections by utilising standardised wash codes on labelling.

Symbol based wash codes have used since 1966 and as they are standardised, they can be used to help date textiles from this period onwards. Before 1966 there was little or no instruction provided.  After 1966, these symbols have been changed, updated and added to at various points.  Consequently the labelling on a garment can be used to help date it.

The factsheet was written by Samantha van de Geer, Object Conservator and Keeper Textile Collections at The Oxfordshire Museums Service.
