Dick Eastwood Besom Maker
Resource verified by SHCG editorial group
Host: North West Film Archive
Date(s): 1942
Notes:
This film follows the work of Dick Eastwood, from Grassington in Yorkshire, as he makes a besom (broom) using traditional tools and materials. After shots of Mr Eastwood gathering ling (heather) on the moors, the film cuts to the outside of his cottage where he washes thin strips of ash. He then uses these strips to bind the ling which is held in a vice. After the broom head is trimmed, a passer by approaches and admires the work. Mr Eastwood attaches the broom handle and the film ends as he puts the besom to use by sweeping his front path.
