Resource verified by SHCG editorial group
Host: North West Film Archive
Date(s): 1951
Notes:
A film by Sam Hanna showing the manufacturing of clay pipes at the John Pollock factory in Manchester, from the raw clay to the finished products. After shots of the raw clay being prepared, there is footage of the clay being rolled into pipe shapes, then hollowed out using moulder's wire, a mould and a gin press. The pipes are trimmed, dried and placed in a kiln, before the mouthpieces of the pipes are painted. Stacks of wooden crates are shown ready for export and a variety of finished pipes are displayed. The film ends with shots of workers smoking their pipes.
