The Handloom Weaver

Resource verified by SHCG editorial group

Host: North West Film Archive

Notes:

Part of the Sam Hanna Collection, this film is about the work of Kathleen Heron, a handloom weaver, at her rural workplace in Embsay near Skipton in Yorkshire. Shots of Miss Heron spinning wool using a treadle wheel are followed by a brief shot of sheep in a field. The dyeing process and the sources of dye are shown, with Miss Heron seen collecting lichen from stone walls followed by shots of flowers in her garden. The dyed wool is seen hanging up to dry, before the film cuts to Miss Heron winding wool and then weaving on her handloom. There are shots of rural views from her window. The film ends with Miss Heron displaying her work to the camera.
