Notes:

This fully illustrated 242 page book looks at the wide range of Trade Union banners held by Edinburgh Museums.

When the Edinburgh people took to the streets to celebrate an event, or to campaign against working practice or an injustice, they carried banners and flags as symbols of their cause.

Banners were carried in rallies and demonstrations, in processions and parades, picnics and funerals and displayed at meetings and events.

Some banners were carried in the campaigns for specific issues such as the reduction of working hours, changes in labour law, closures and cuts in pay and public service.

Many of the banners in the collection were collected by the Scottish Labour History Society.
