The Reform of Prisoners 1830-1900

This study focuses on Victorian approaches to the moral reformation of prisoners. Central to this examination is the shift in attitudes towards offenders and prison punishment from being influences by evangelical and utilitarian ideas to, after 1860, a shift toward deterrence and a more scientific analysis of human conduct.
