Notes:
Magicians and men considered to be superior in wisdom have operated in many cultures for centuries. The service they provided for their community varied in the degree of importance attached to it, and also in the nature of the tasks. Early references to such people, for example Biblical priests and prophets, Zoroastrian magi, etc., treat of them as learned and scholarly men who held the accumulated wisdom of their society within their grasp.
