Notes:
Out of print, but in libraries. Covers a broad range of London's diverse communities.
Published to accompany a Museum of London exhibition from November 1993 to May 1994, this book sets out to show that London has had a cosmopolitan population from its very beginnings. Following the settlement of the Thames valley in prehistoric times, the city and port of London were founded by the Romans, and the first "Londoners" arrived and settled from all over the Roman Empire. Since then the energy and skills of people from overseas have strongly influenced the city's development, turning it into a dynamic, multi-cultural capital of immense richness and diversity. The book is set out as an historical overview and a series of illustrated chapters on the history of London's major communities. It also includes a practical guide to researching the local community, with a listing of museums, libraries and archives.
