Call for papers – SHCG Journal 2022
Articles are now being sought for the next issue of the SHCG Journal, Social History in Museums, to be published in Spring 2022. As with this year’s conference, the theme of this issue will centre on:
Challenging social history: navigating difficulties and caring for contested collections
In light of events including Black Lives Matter, the growing awareness of the climate change emergency and the rise in transphobia, the sector is looking for ways to highlight, re-assess and re-focus underrepresented stories and communities through our collections. Decolonising our collections databases and increasing partnership working are just some of the ways museums have been reviewing their practice in recent months.
Have you looked into a dark side of your institution’s past? Are you undertaking innovative ways of collecting new material to represent the underrepresented in your local community, or to represent contested events? What current challenges are unique to social history collections and museums? Does our collecting remit make us best placed to address challenging and contested narratives? How do we look after our own health and wellbeing when working with contested collections or stories?
We welcome proposals for articles from speakers at this year’s conference, museum professionals, researchers, academics and students. We also strongly encourage new contributions from practitioners in this field, so please get the message out there! You DO NOT have to be a member of the SHCG to contribute to the Journal.
Please send an abstract of no more than 200 words to the Journal Editor (journalshcg@gmail.com) by Friday 1st October. When submitting your abstract, include your name, contact details, job title and institution (where relevant).
If your abstract is accepted for publication, the deadline for submission of first drafts to the Journal Editor will be Friday 3rd December. Please refer to the attached Guidance for Contributors.

We’re also looking for reviews of exhibitions, podcasts, books, etc related to social history in museums, galleries, archives or heritage institutions. SHCG can support you in the purchase of books or exhibition tickets for review, so please get in touch with the Journal Editor if you are interested.
PEER REVIEWERS
As with recent years, there will be a peer review process for submitted articles. Experienced sector professionals will read and comment on articles, and authors will have an opportunity to amend their articles in view of the reviewers’ comments.
This year we’re seeking to add to our small pool of peer reviewers. Please contact the Journal Editor if you would be interested in acting as a reviewer or would like further information on what this entails.
