What is it? Photography

Discovery Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne

This free training day at Discovery Museum is for anyone who would like to improve their skills in identifying the different types of photographic material in their social history collections (including various types of prints, postcards, carte de visite and glass plate negatives). 

By the end of the day you will have:
• Improved your understanding of the historical development of photography
• Learnt how to identify historic photographic processes includingdaguerreotypes, ambrotypesand albumen prints
• Improved your knowledge of appropriate ways to care forphotographs and negatives
• Gained skills in how to date 19th and early 20th century photographs from analysing their content
• Obtained useful sources of support for further research and study.

The ‘What is it?’ day is one of a series of three training days funded by Arts Council England in order to improve curatorial skills. The day is completely free, including refreshments. Lunch is not included.
